Trepanning In trepanning the cutting tool produces a hole by removing a disk shaped piece also called slug or core, usually from flat plates. The hole is produced without reducing all the material removed to chips, as is the case in drilling. The trepanning process can be used to make disks up to 6 in. dia. from flat sheet or plate. Trepanning can be done on lathes, drill presses and milling machines, as well others machines using single point or multi point tools. Trepanning is a roughing operation. Finishing work requires a secondary operation using reamers or boring bars to get a specified size and finish.
